Today, nearly half of the public knows someone who uses online dating or who has met a spouse or partner via online dating – and attitudes toward online dating have grown progressively more positive.
To be sure, many people remain puzzled that someone would want to find a romantic partner online – 23% of Americans agree with the statement that “people who use online dating sites are desperate” – but in general it is much more culturally acceptable than it was a decade ago.
Many use popular forums like (a website whose members exchange 400m messages a year) or Tinder (an app that produces 26m matches a day).
But there are also more discerning services on offer.
Sixth-graders claim to be dating when, after extensive negotiations conducted by third parties, two of them go out for ice cream.
The ratio between college graduates and high-school dropouts is almost four to one. People with impressive degrees and fat wallets are often pressed for time, and are more likely to agree that online dating is efficient – though not by much. Affluent, high-achieving Americans are comparatively reluctant to describe online daters as desperate.
Digital technology and smartphones in particular have transformed many aspects of our society, including how people seek out and establish romantic relationships.
Few Americans had online dating experience when Pew Research Center first polled on the activity in 2005, but today 15% of U. adults report they have used online dating sites or mobile dating apps.
Online dating businesses serve the public when they are looking for new relationships, romance, love and the possibility of a new and lasting partnership.
The Association will have an important and traditional role as a trade body – ensuring the sector is properly represented so that it has a stronger voice with Government, regulators, the media, financial service providers, social networks and others.
